Quantum dynamics, emergent physics, and new methods for discovery.

Fabio Anza leads the Anza Group for Complexity, Quantumness, and the Physics of Information, an interdisciplinary research endeavor that studies natural and artificial systems using information theory, and seeks to understand, control and exploit the information-processing resources embedded in their dynamics.

Our research spans three connected themes: quantum dynamics and non-equilibrium physics; quantum foundations and emergent physics; and AI and formal verification for physics. Within each theme, research directions connect the broader questions to specific projects and papers. Work can contribute to more than one theme.

Students or postdocs interested in joining the group should reach out to PI Anza at fanza@umbc.edu.

01Quantum dynamics and non-equilibrium physicsGeometric approaches, many-body dynamics, and the physics of ensembles in complex quantum systems.
02Quantum foundations and emergent physicsThe quantum origins of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, and the emergence of smooth spacetime from quantum gravity.
03AI and formal verification for physicsAgentic systems for quantum physics research and machine-checked reasoning in Lean 4.
