Quantum Information Physics

A graduate course on how physical systems store, process, and transmit information. Classical and quantum information theory are developed through concrete questions about compression, reliable communication, and state distinguishability. Topics span entropy, Shannon coding theorems, stochastic processes, quantum states and channels, and entanglement as a physical resource. Students apply these tools in an independent research project in the physics of information.

PHYS 303Fall

Thermodynamics

A course connecting the laws of thermodynamics with the statistical physics of many-particle systems. Topics include temperature and entropy, equations of state, thermodynamic processes, statistical ensembles, and equilibrium phase transitions, with applications to gases, liquids, magnetic systems, and radiation. The course emphasizes physical understanding, quantitative problem-solving, and rigorous derivations.

Textbook: Herbert B. Callen, Thermodynamics and an Introduction to Thermostatistics.
